Abstract
Spectroscopy and population dynamics of KYb(WO4)2:7%Tm crystal as well as KY(WO4)2:15%Tm have been studied under free-running NdYAG laser pumping. Due to relatively high absorption cross-section 3F4→3F3+3F2 and effective cross-relaxation, the population of the upper laser manifold 3F4 rises exponentially and saturates at approximately 80% of total Tm concentration. Under longitudinal pump of 1064nm, unstable laser operation of both crystals in the spectral range 1950nm to 1970nm (KYbW:7%Tm) and 1850nm to 1950nm (KYW:15%Tm) has been demonstrated.
