Abstract
Laser-diode side-pumped 2.1 μm operation of an Yb:Ho:YAG laser has been demonstrated. The material parameters and laser performance have been compared with those for Tm:YAG and Tm:Ho:YAG. In spite of a lower theoretical maximum quantum efficiency, it was found that Yb:Ho:YAG has potential for better Q-switched performance than Tm:Ho:YAG, in particular in low pulse-rate operation.
