Abstract
The excited state absorption and stimulated emission spectra of the 4F3/2 excited state of the Nd3+ ion in Y3Al5O12, YAlO3, and Y2O3 were measured in a continuous wave pump- and probe experiment. The excited state absorption at the main pump band around 808nm as well as at the main emission band around 1064nm is weak. Its influence on the 1320nm laser transition can be rather strong - due to transitions to the 2G9/2 and 4G7/2-levels - especially in Y2O3 and YAlO3, whereas in Y3Al5O12 it is negligible. No influence on the Nd:Y3Al5O12 laser transition at 1444nm was found. The spectral positions of the measured transitions are in good agreement with the theoretically expected transitions calculated from the known Stark level splittings.
