Abstract

The basic optical properties of Ce3+ ions in both oxide and fluoride hosts are presented. We have measured the absorption and emission spectra, and fluorescence decay times of these materials at room temperature using monochromatic and polychromatic sources. The phonon broadened absorption bands range from the visible to the ultra-violet (UV). By pumping in any of the absorption bands, strong emission transitions ranging from the visible to the UV are observed, with decay times of less than 100 ns.
