Abstract

Optical gain at 1061 nm in Cr, Nd:GSGG has been observed when this material is subjected to pulsed X-rays. The source of the X-rays is the Hermes III electron accelerator and bremsstrahlung converter at Sandia National Laboratories.1 A 20 ns pulse of X-rays with mean energy of 2 MeV is generated by this machine. A Lightwave Technology Model 124D-GSGG CW laser is used to probe the crystal during and after the X-ray pulse. Crystals with and without chromium doping have been obtained from Litton Airtron. Thermoluminescence detectors (TLD) have been used to measure the absorbed dose.
