Abstract

In our search for new self frequency doubling Nd3+ doped laser materials, we have studied the optical properties and laser capabilities of the non-linear crystal LaBGeO5:Nd3+. This material presents interesting non-linear and thermomechanical properties and lasing lines at 1.048 and 1.071 μm (4F3/2->4I11/2) and at 1.31 and 1.38 μm (4F3/2->4I13/2) [1]. Additionally it shows some advantages over the recently developed LiNbO3:MgO:Nd3+ minilasers such as absence of photorefractive damage, higher distribution coefficient for the Nd3+ ions and no domain structure. The laser line at 1.048 μm also appears particularly interesting for self-frequency doubling purposes because of its polarisation properties.
