Abstract

A new antiresonant Fabry-Perot saturable absorber (A- FPSA) is an intracavity, low-loss, compact (total thickness < 500 μm) nonlinear mirror which starts and sustains stable modelocking of Nd:YLF and Nd:YAG lasers and produces 3.3 ps and 9.2 ps pulse durations respectively. Using a Fabry-Perot at antiresonance transforms the semiconductor to a high saturation intensity, low-loss saturable absorber as required for modelocking solid-state lasers. In addition, we are able to passively Q-switch the Nd:YLF laser.
