Abstract
Two new methods are presented for studying thermal effects in laser crystals. The methods are easily implemented and can be automated. They involve measurement with a position sensitive detector or a CCD camera of the displacement of a probe beam passing through the crystal under study. Detection of this displacement is independent of probe beam or back ground light intensities and can be done with high spatial and/or temporal resolution. Because of their spatial resolution these techniques are not restricted to radially symmetric temperature profiles.
