Abstract

Measurements have been made on crystals of BaY2F8:Er 5% to determine the optical absorption line strengths. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters were determined and have been used to calculate oscillator strengths for transitions between various excited levels. We identify candidates for upconversion laser operation and discuss laser observations across the visible spectrum.
