Abstract

New mixtures of YSGG, GSGG, and GSAG doped with Cr3+ and Nd3+ have been investigated for their spectral and laser properties. These hosts allow a higher concentration of Nd3+ ions than YAG with less suffering from concentration quenching. Changing of the composition allows a variation of the Nd3+ emission cross-section and wavelength of lasing according to the requirements of the laser operation. The efficiency of Cr→Nd energy transfer in mixtured crystals is the same as for GSGG:Cr,Nd crystals. The absorption lines for diode pumping in the region of 800 nm are broader than in Nd:YAG. All mixtures have been operated in a quasi plano-concetric resonator end-pumped by a Ti: Sapphire laser at 809 nm. With a YSGG0.67/GSAG0.33:Nd3+ we achieved an output power of 579 mW at 1062 nm. With an absorbed pump power of 1.2 W and a threshold of 12 mW this corresponds to a slope efficiency of 48%.
