Abstract
In Ti:YAlO3 strong excited state absorption (ESA) of the pumping wavelength into a charge transfer band is observed. This CT band is also found in the groundstate absorption spectrum at 280nm and depends linearly on the Ti4+ concentration. At the same wavelength a strong peak occurs in the excitation spectrum. All these experimental results can be explained within a configurational model and lead to the conclusion, that a Ti3+/Ti4+ complex center decreases the lasing efficiency of Ti:YAlO3 strongly.
