Abstract

The lasing threshold and efficiency have been obtained for Nd3+ in a fluoride glass host pumped by an alexandrite laser. Excited state absorption of pump photons was found to be a factor in the reduced efficiency of the laser observed at some pump wavelengths. A rate equation model was developed to qualitatively describe this effect.
