Abstract

Diode-pumped solid-state lasers have been shown to be compact, efficient sources of laser radiation. Active mode-locking of diode-pumped lasers has been achieved using amplitude modulation and pulses as short as 7 ps have been obtained.1-3 Here, we demonstrate that short pulses can be generated in these devices with no need for active modulation by coupling to a nonlinear external cavity. Mode-locked pulses of ~ 1.7 ps in Nd:YAG have been measured; we believe that these are the shortest pulses obtained from a mode-locked Nd3+ laser.
