Abstract

We have investigated a series of Er3+-doped glasses for fiber laser and amplifier applications since glass compositions are required that are more amenable to diode laser pumping at 800 nm. The absorption and stimulated emission cross sections have been measured for the 4I13/20↔ 4i15/2 transition at 1.5 µm. Of the glasses examined, Ge-doped silica was found to have the smallest oscillator strength and a phosphate glass the largest. The variations in bandwidth were found to be even larger, with the silica having the narrowest emission band and a fluorozirconate glass the widest.
