Abstract

At first sight, Mn2+ in a low crystal field seems to be a suitable candidate for short wavelength solid state lasers [11]. In spinel (MgAl2O4) Mn2+occupies the tetrahedrally coordinated Mg sites providing a low crystal field environment. Under 456 nm Ar-laser excitation very bright green fluorescence is observed. However, no laser action could be obtained due to excited state absorption (ESA). In this paper we present time resolved ESA-measurements of Mn:MgAl2O4.
