Abstract

Historically, the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) has been conceptualized as a tunable, high power, solid state laser source. This promise has not been fulfilled due to the limitations of available nonlinear materials. Recent work by Donaldson, Rosker, Tang, et.al. has demonstrated the possibility of practical OPO's based on urea. The superior nonlinear qualities of this material can be exploited to produce broadband tunable laser radiation between 550 and 900nm at average power levels up to 50mW.
