Abstract
The problem of determining the temperature distribution in a solid state laser has been treated previously by assuming an infinitly long rod with a uniformily distributed heat source1. This two dimensional approach does not apply when the length of the laser crystal is comparable to its diameter; furthermore, the axial symmetry of an infinite rod is broken when it is end-pumped. We derive an expression for the time-dependent temperature distribution in an end-pumped cylindrical rod of finite length.
