Absorption and Emission Fine Structure in ScBO3: Cr3+

Abstract

SCBO3: Cr3+ has recently been found to lase between 778 and 892nm.1 The broadband fluorescence originates from the radiative decay of the lowest excited 4T2 state. Because the Cr3+ ion sits in a nearly perfect octahedron of oxygen atoms, the transition from 4T2 to 4A2 is parity forbidden so the radiative lifetime is 118µs.
