Abstract

Spaceborne remote sensing laser energy requirements exceed 1 joule per pulse for some applications. To meet this requirement, NASA Langley is currently investigating the operation of Ti:Al2O3 in Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) configurations. Measurements of two important aspects of the power amplifier, gain and energy extraction, have been performed as a function of probe and pump fluences for the combinations of Gaussian pump with both circular and Gaussian probe beam profiles. In addition, the timing between the probe and pump pulses necessary for optimum extraction from the amplifier has been determined.
