Abstract

The demonstration1 of the wavelength-tunable Ti:Al2O3 laser has led to renewed interest in the growth of sapphire crystals doped with Ti3+ ions, which are responsible for the laser action. Laser performance has generally been limited by a parasitic optical absorption band of unknown origin that is present in the laser output wavelength region.
