Abstract
The FA (11) and FB (11) centers are among the most stable of all the various laser active color centers in the alkali halides. Despite their stability and their longtime use in laboratory spectroscopic systems, there exists no comprehensive study of the optimization of laser performance of these materials. Such an analysis is useful both to extend the performance level of current lasers, and to serve as a benchmark with which to compare the current materials with others which may be developed in the future. We have characterized the performance of these materials with the intent of maximizing the output power and tuning range through a systematic optimization of dopant levels, coloring densities, pump laser wavelengths and pump polarizations.
