Photorefractive parametric amplification and generation of light beams in BaTiO3 by forward four-wave mixing

Abstract

We demonstrate light amplification by forward four-wave mixing in BaTiO3. An extraordinarily polarized signal beam is amplified by the simultaneous action of an ordinary and an extraordinary pump wave. A forward phase-conjugate wave is also generated. We solve the coupled wave equation analytically in the undepleted-pump-approximation and also numerically taking into account pump depletion. Because of the phase-matching condition involved, the gain depends strongly on the extraordinary refractive index. This is used to modulate the gain by the thermooptic effect.
