Abstract

Light-induced refractive-index changes, bulk-photovoltaic current densities, and photoconductivities are investigated in lithium niobate crystals (LiNbO3), using samples doped with iron or copper up to 72×l0−24 m−3, The saturation values of the refractive-index changes are limited to 7×10−4 for ordinarily polarized light, even for highly- doped material. The reason is a strong increase of the specific photoconductivity for high concentrations of photorefractive centers, whereas the specific bulk-photovoltaic effect is found to be nearly independent of the doping concentration.
