Abstract
We present a new class of algorithms for the detection of faint companions to stars. In general, the methods discriminate between real sources and stellar PSF features based on statistics of recorded intensity in multiple-frame adaptive-optics observations. The new approach was tested on astronomical observations carried out with the 3-m Shane telescope, and on high-contrast coronagraphic data recorded in a laboratory experiment.
