Fabrication and characterisation of transparent ceramics with new optical properties

Abstract

The ongoing trend for miniaturization of digital photographic devices requires optical materials with very high refractive indices of 2.0 and above. In addition optical materials with special dispersion characteristics find increasing demand. By doping with rare-earth ions, transparent luminescent oxide materials are obtained, which are of crucial importance to optoelectronics. These materials are widely deployed in a number of devices including display phosphors, lamps, lasers and scintillators. Recent developments in the areas of rare-earth doped semiconductors and insulators gave rise to a need for materials with high functionality and greater optoelectronic integration.
