Experimental Investigation of Underwater Weak Optical Communication Using a Photomultiplier Tube Receiver

Abstract

Using an LED source, a photon counting receiver and return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) modulation with a duty cycle of 0.7, the receiver sensitivity of -70dBm is successfully achieved for a 5Mbps intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) underwater weak optical communication (UWOC) system. For 1Mbps data rate, the highest receiver sensitivity is enhanced to -76dBm.
