Abstract
Optical path network which connects users directly through optical switches is one of the promising candidates for processing huge capacity data such as high definition video contents with low power consumption. A project named VICTORIES (Vertically Integrated Center for Technologies of Routing toward Ideal Energy Savings) started in July 2008 at AIST collaborating with companies. The target is to develop technologies for the optical path network. Its characteristic feature is the vertical integrated development of technologies. Silicon-photonics based matrix switches are being developed targeting large-scale, small-size and low-cost device at the bottom layer, automatic dispersion compensation technology and optical nodes are being developed at middle layer, and network resource management technologies are being developed at upper layer. Also the architecture of the path network is being studied. The background and the plan of the project and the achievements so far are to be presented. Article not available.
