Index Profile Engineering of Multimode Interference Couplers

Abstract

We propose a technique to improve the performance of high index contrast Multimode Interference couplers. It is shown that imaging errors can be almost completely removed if the refractive index profile of the multimode region is properly designed. Optimized devices exhibit very low excess losses, power imbalance and phase errors.
