MEMS Auto-Aligner for Free-Space Optical Interconnect in Computer Servers

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Free-space optical interconnect using arrays of VCSELs can significantly increase the board-to-board interconnect bandwidth in computer servers. However, static alignment errors due to board tilt and insertion offsets have prevented their deployment. We present a novel MEMS microlens scanner capable of correcting misalignment without zero steady-state power consumption.
