Abstract
The advent of optical fibres based on air holes running along their entirety opens up new directions in addressing various properties relevant to sensing, including the temperature/strain challenge of optical fibre sensors and as well the incorporation of new materials that were previously not possible. Combining these channels with new materials that exploit the localisation of light at the interface to enhance sensitivity with laser processed components offers an unprecedented level of device complexity, including potential lab-in-a-fibre technology.
