Fast Analytical Evaluation of Fiber Nonlinear Noise Variance in Mesh Optical Networks

Abstract

We propose a fast analytical model to evaluate fiber nonlinear noise variance for real-time planning of mesh optical networks. This model is based on an incoherent Gaussian noise (IGN) model with related coefficients precalculated and stored for each fiber type. The impact of span length is modeled using a fitting function. For WDM transmissions, channel combination terms are calculated to account for the contributions from various nonlinear interaction sources. The accuracy of the proposed scheme is comprehensively evaluated in extensive simulations. It is shown that, with channels added and dropped at various link locations, the proposed scheme is able to provide sufficiently high accuracy in most of the cases.
